Chapter 13 A Vivid Defense Against the Dark Arts Lesson
Chapter 13 A Vivid Defense Against the Dark Arts Lesson
The Hogwarts schedule is actually quite similar to the university in Qin Yu's previous life. You get up at seven or eight in the morning, then have breakfast together in the Great Hall, and classes start at nine. There are two classes in the morning and two in the afternoon, after which you can arrange your own time.
Of course, the content of the classes was much more exciting than in his previous life.
For example, Defense Against the Dark Arts class.
The instructor, Stephen Swinton, is said to have been a magic doctor in the past. His hobby is showing violent and bloody animated images related to dark forces during class, with the goal of making a deep impression on his students.
Recently, Qin Yu and his classmates were learning how to treat werewolf bites. Professor Swinton found a lot of photos of werewolf bite wounds and brutal images of wizards infected and turned into werewolves.
"As the book says, if an infection occurs after being bitten by a werewolf, it will be incurable because it is an ancient curse. Therefore, the first thing to do after being bitten is to clean the wound thoroughly. What does 'thoroughly clean' mean? Jerome, you answer that!" Professor Swinton said, calling on a student to ask a question at the end.
“I don’t know, Professor Swinton,” a red-haired Slytherin boy said quite frankly.
"Oh, I don't know... then let me tell you!"
As Professor Swinton spoke, he tapped the stack of magic cards on the podium with his wand and then waved it toward Jerome.
Immediately afterwards, a dynamic projection appeared in front of Jerome.
It was a woman, swinging her wand at her own bloodied and mangled hand, which was instantly severed at the wrist.
This scene made many students, even those who were far away, feel sorry for the woman in the picture.
"It seems you still don't understand."
Before Professor Swinton had finished speaking, another projection was drawn to Jerome by the wand.
It was a burly man with bite marks on half of his face from a wild animal, and he had simply sliced off that half of his face with his wand.
"Whoosh!"
Upon seeing this, the classroom erupted in a cacophony of startled voices.
The children had never experienced such a shock before, and they were all terrified.
Jerome, who was the first to be hit, froze on the spot when he saw the hideous wound. His throat moved slightly as he swallowed nervously.
"Don't you understand yet?" Professor Swinton asked.
As he said this, he poked the stack of magic cards with his wand again.
"Waaah..."
Jerome finally couldn't take it anymore, covered his mouth, and stormed out the door.
Shortly afterward, the sound of someone vomiting repeatedly came from the corridor.
"Tsk, Professor, is this really appropriate?" Qin Yu couldn't help but say.
"Compared to becoming a ruthless beast after turning into a werewolf, I think it's worth the little fright you're experiencing now," Professor Swinton explained earnestly, without taking offense.
“Okay, what you said makes sense…” Qin Yu said, then asked, “Isn’t there a better way to clean the wound? Or is there any medicine that can treat it before it flares up?”
Qin Yu was thinking of rabies vaccines in the Muggle world.
Professor Swinton shook his head and said, "So far, the most effective way we can clean it is by peeling off the wound. Of course, some people use wound healing spells and are not ultimately infected, but these are very rare cases. As for the potion you mentioned, to my knowledge, there is currently no magical potion that can completely prevent or cure the werewolf curse."
These answers, combined with those gruesome images, left the students with solemn expressions.
The professor paused, then continued, "However, there is a recently discovered wolfsbane potion that can temporarily suppress werewolf transformations, but it requires exceptional potion-making talent and ability to prepare. Your potions teacher, Professor Snape, should be able to do it. Of course, I hope you will never have to drink such a potion."
So, it would be more appropriate for Snape to teach this lesson, right? Qin Yu thought to himself.
Qin Yu actually had no "recollection" of this Professor Swinton, while Professor Quirrell, whom he was familiar with, was currently traveling somewhere and would not begin teaching the course until next year.
……
After an incredibly "lively" Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, the students left the classroom looking quite grim and went to the Great Hall in twos and threes for lunch.
During lunch today, most of the first-year students showed little appetite, unlike before when they were captivated by the house-elves' cooking and ate heartily.
Qin Yu was an exception, of course. In his previous life, he actually enjoyed watching crime movies and TV shows, which were full of bloody and gruesome corpses. He had developed some immunity to them and returned to normal after the course ended.
"Jerome, are you alright?" a little boy at the Slytherin table asked Jerome with concern.
"Professor Swinton is absolutely despicable. Why does he have to target me?" Jerome was still feeling nauseous and had no appetite for the food in front of him, which annoyed him greatly.
"It seems every teacher has their own special tricks. I've heard that Professor Snape is also quite ruthless, and students often cry from his scolding," the little boy said, sharing what he knew.
"I still prefer the History of Magic class. Professor Binns' lectures have a strong sleep-inducing effect, and he doesn't care if I sleep," Jerome remarked.
At the Gryffindor dining table where Qin Yu was, the freshmen were also discussing the courses they had recently taken.
They were somewhat apprehensive about Professor Snape's class, especially since Snape was the head of Slytherin House, and they, the Gryffindor students, might be treated unfairly.
Qin Yu, of course, smiled but remained silent.
He knew that Professor Snape was actually a very kind person at heart, but because of his personality, he appeared cold on the outside.
Of course, you can't talk to these kids about these things, and they wouldn't believe you anyway.
……
After lunch, after resting for a while, roommates Wilson, Jimmy, and Bock left together, while Qin Yu and the somewhat introverted Elvis followed behind.
He wasn't actually that averse to interacting with these "kids," but there were some differences in interests due to the "age difference."
Therefore, he became relatively closer to Elvis, because the boy was quieter and less disruptive.
Thinking of the commotion, Qin Yu couldn't help but picture Hermione chattering away beside him, and a smile crept onto his lips.
"Qin, are you thinking about something happy?" Elvis asked timidly.
He was trying to get along with his classmates, but he was still a little awkward at it. Qin Yu thought to himself.
"Yeah, I thought of a friend. I promised to write her a letter before school started, so I have to write it today, otherwise she'll get angry and I won't be able to appease her," Qin Yu said with a smile.
“That’s great, you still have friends to write to…” Elvis said with a hint of envy.
"You can write to me in the future too, of course, after we leave school, such as during winter or summer vacation, or after we graduate," Qin Yu said, patting him on the shoulder.
“Really? I’ll definitely write to you!” Elvis said happily.
“I will reply to you too,” Qin Yu said with a smile, then urged, “Elvis, we need to hurry up, or we might be late for Potions class.”
After listening to Qin Yu's words, Elvis jogged after him to catch up with Wilson, Jimmy, and Burke.
After Qin Yu and the other man overtook them, Jimmy shouted and started running as well, as if he wanted to see who was faster. Wilson and Burke were naturally not willing to fall behind and tried their best to keep up.
For a moment, the corridor echoed with the laughter of boys chasing each other.
"Children's happiness is so simple," Qin Yu couldn't help but sigh.
Then he went into the underground classroom and saw that Professor Snape, alive and cold, had already arrived there.
