Chapter 25, First Conflict
Chapter 25, First Conflict
"Good boy, well done. You controlled your temper and didn't clash with that idiot coach."
"Thanks for the compliment, Kobe, but I'm not your dog."
Coach Ke praised Wang Kai for controlling his temper, but Wang Kai regretted not punching that stupid coach a couple of times on the spot.
That's just how people are; often, they regret the choices they make on the spot.
Wang Kai was like that; the more he thought about it, the more he regretted it, feeling that he had been too weak.
"Boy, you need to understand, this is the NBA. It's right that you didn't choose to shoot, because you haven't proven your worth yet. Only when you prove your worth by surpassing your opponent can you do whatever you want."
"I understand, but I'm still angry."
"It's right to be angry; it shows you're a man of character. Good boy!"
"Fako!"
Besides Kobe Bryant expressing his praise for Wang Kai's restraint in not taking any physical action in a unique way, team leader Baron Davis also expressed his support for Wang Kai.
"Dude, ignore him. He won't last long. He treats this place like Stanford. Nobody on the team likes him. Jason even said that his training sessions feel like suffocating."
"Thank you, Byron, I understand, but we Chinese have a saying, 'Things shouldn't happen more than three times,' and my tolerance has its limits."
After Montgomery "suppressed" the rookies in the intrasquad games, he felt that he had established basic authority in the team, but in fact, even more people looked down on him.
Moreover, some smart people in the team felt that their head coach might really have a problem with his brain. Everyone could see Wang Kai's importance to General Manager Chris Mullin, yet the head coach was trying to suppress Wang Kai. What did this mean? It meant that the head coach was trying to seize power from the general manager.
季前训练营从10月4日开始,到10月11日结束,三天后,2005-2006赛季NBA季前赛正式开打。
The Warriors' first game will be played on October 14th. Wang Kai is ready. Even if he doesn't get a starting opportunity, he feels that he will definitely amaze everyone when he comes off the bench.
However, to Wang Kai's surprise, he sat on the bench for a full 47 minutes.
In the final minute of the game, Montgomery signaled for Wang Kai to come on.
Anger made Wang Kai's face very gloomy, but he knew that if he were to clash with this idiot coach at this moment, it would be a loss that would not be worthwhile.
After Wang Kai entered the game, he ran for two rounds before the match ended.
Seeing the Chinese fans on both sides of the player tunnel extending pens to him for autographs, Wang Kai put on a smile, signed autographs for all the fans on both sides, and then walked into the player tunnel.
"Well done, man, first appearance, one minute and six seconds."
"Don't force me to swear, old man. There's way more swear words in Chinese than in English."
In the following six preseason games, Wang Kai averaged 1.4 minutes per game and scored 1.8 points.
"Mike, we need to talk."
2005年11月1日,2005-2006赛季NBA常规赛正式拉开帷幕。
The Warriors' first game of the season is scheduled for November 2nd, when they will host the Hawks.
The day before the match, Chris Mullin approached Mike Montgomery and asked to speak.
"Mike, I'd like to know why you're not giving our rookies more playing time?"
"Chris, I gave them time. Monte Ellis did a good job; he's a competent assault soldier."
"Mike, I think you know who I'm talking about."
"That Chinese kid isn't ready yet. He needs to prove himself in training. I told him to drive to the basket and get close to the rim to be efficient, but he doesn't follow my tactics. He's not a qualified player, and the team should be prepared to trade him."
"Mike, are you sure you're speaking soberly? We got Wang in exchange for Pietrus. He's very important to the team. I hope you can prioritize and not act recklessly."
"Chris, when I joined the Warriors, you promised me you wouldn't interfere with my player selection. What, are you going to go back on your promise now?"
"Of course, I won't interfere with your personnel decisions, but only if your personnel decisions are correct."
"Chris, you haven't played a single game in the regular season, so why are you saying my player selection is wrong? I told you during the draft that you shouldn't pick high schoolers, they're just half-finished products. Why didn't you pick any college players and instead chose two high schoolers? Your choice is wrong. I will prove with my results that my tactics are absolutely correct. These guys who only have muscles in their heads have to listen to me for them to win."
An enraged Mike Montgomery slammed the door and stormed out, leaving General Manager Chris Mullin alone, his face flushed.
In the first game of the regular season, Wang Kai sat on the bench watching the team's starting lineup come on.
After the game started, Joe Johnson, who had an amazing performance with the Suns last season, led the Hawks to a strong performance.
Joe James contributed 9 points in the first quarter, including a three-pointer.
The Warriors kept the game close in the first quarter, with Troy Murphy scoring 6 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in the paint, helping the Warriors stay within 25-24.
Wang Kai was idly chewing his fingers on the sidelines, and Montgomery showed no intention of letting him play.
In the second quarter, the tide turned dramatically as the Warriors' interior defense was overwhelmed, with Al Harrington and Zaza Pachulia dominating the Warriors' defensive rebounds.
Baron Davis went cold after returning from a rest in the first half of the second quarter, managing only one assist.
Wang Kai remained seated on the sidelines, not moving an inch, and Montgomery didn't even bother to look at him.
At halftime, the Warriors trailed the Hawks 57-47 by 10 points.
Back in the locker room, Montgomery continued his "performance," berating Murphy, the center who was dominated by the opponent in the second quarter, and veteran Foyle. He also demanded that the team continue to attack the Hawks' interior in the second half and protect the rebounds on defense.
"Stop fucking shooting threes! Look at your shooting percentage, 1 for 7! Attack the basket, Byron, fight like a man! And Mr. Murphy, are you a wimp? Why are you always on the perimeter? Where's your position?"
Montgomery slammed his tactical board and yelled in the locker room.
"Let me tell you, all you need to do is execute my tactics, not play like sissies on the perimeter. You all know who I'm talking about. If you don't execute my tactics, no one will get a chance. I won't give people like that any opportunity."
"Your tactics are outdated, old man. If you're so capable, then don't let me play this season."
Wang Kai decided to stop holding back and stood up, yelling at Montgomery.
